==The state of the Wiki==
==The state of the Wiki==

As you probably noticed, we were forced to relocate from our previous home at wikispaces due to space pirate attack. Who would have thought? Hopefully Wikimedia will be more resilient.
This is now our second tango with WikiMedia - now hosted on Amazon Web Services. The older Home Page can be found in this page's history.

===New benefits===
* What You See Is What You Get editor is finally live! No more need to use those godawful "<nowiki><br></nowiki>" tags for linebreaks anymore. I do think this is a very decent editor, myself. You can of course always use "Edit Source" in order to use the old system for more fine-tuning, if you so choose. Still remember to add signatures in Talk pages, though now you have a button for that.
* Slightly more consistent skin usage. If you aren't already, I recommend using "Dark Vector" for optimal viewing. If you want more skins, say so and I will import them.
*The AWS server is now under our full control. It's not very powerful, but it IS mostly idle, and nothing stops us from running side-projects. If you ask nicely you can have SSH credentials and some explanations.
*Upgrading to latest wiki version and loading various plugins and themes should be super easy, barely an inconvenience. Ask if you want any plugins and I'll get 'em.
*Vectron is pleased. At least, that seems probable!
*Space piracy protection - the basic AWS Frigate* service comes with ground batteries and a 30-missile launcher array, as well as just-in-time patrol services. Starlane defense is provided by EC2 Fleet**, of course. If you want to upgrade to the Advanced package for star system monitoring and Space Denial Area, that will cost extra but let me know.

* Service may be made-up

===What was transferred===
** Service is not imaginary but may not actually include what I say it does.
* All the articles, except the old Home Page. For the most part they were imported faithfully, typos and all.
* All the comments on the articles. They're in the relevant Discussion pages, including signatures and timestamps.
* All the files that we uploaded in the past, except the Starlight Simulator files.
* Tags, except they're now in the form of Categories. They function very similarly, however. A few of the names have been tweaked to fit in better as Categories.
* Permissions have been set up. No one without an account can read the wiki, nor make an account.

===What wasn't transferred===
=== Additional work done ===
* The editing history on our articles. We'll have to live without it.
* The old Home Page.
* The Starlight Simulator files.
* It's possible that here and there some line break will be gone or an article will be missing its categories. I tried to avoid that but it's possible. Make corrections as desired.

===Features that don't work yet and probably should===
* Site certificate has been changed. You '''might''' get a "not secure" message on your browser still, which is a bitch to get rid of, but you shouldn't get more security warnings. Please alert if that does happen.
* What You See Is What You Get editor - still need to install that extension. For now it's just wiki markup, but with a few buttons to help make it a bit easier. Until we have this, please make sure to add <nowiki>"<br>"</nowiki> markers for line breaks, and <nowiki>"--~~~~"</nowiki> marks for signatures on Talk pages.
*A thumbnail on the browser tab - favicon has been established. Using the same galaxy picture; if you want a different one, say so.
* Thumbnails for .tif files. Not that I know why you're even using that format, but yeah, right now the thumbnails are broken (though you can download them and view them at your leisure).
*Verified that debug messages from the php aren't exposed. We can re-enable them if we need to.
* Uploading arbitrary file types. If you want to upload something of a file extension that's not currently supported, let me know and I'll set it up.
* No easy way to start a new civ from template - MediaWiki Templates don't work in the same way. Right now you have to manually copy from the [[Template:Civilization]] page.
* A thumbnail on the browser tab would be nice.
* Can probably spice up the side bar a little bit. Sound off if you want anything there that you want to access frequently and isn't there right now.
* Protection from space pirates. As per request, this now has top priority, to be rectified as soon as is possible*.

<nowiki>* Item may be impossible</nowiki>
===Work still to do===
This was a bit of a rush job, but I will start improving on things quickly now, probably.
*Thumbnails for .tif files - haven't checked if this works or not. '''Still''' not sure why you're even using that format.
* Uploading arbitrary file types - haven't checked this either.
* Need to explore template usage. In theory a page can be set to use a template. If that doesn't work for you, manually copy from the [[Template:Civilization]] page.
*Sound off if you want anything on the side bar that isn't there yet.

MediaWiki has been installed.
The default main page was keen on mentioning this, in case you were unable to deduce this from the fact that you were reading this in a wiki, presumably because you were having a stroke.

Consult the User's Guide for information on using the wiki software.

The state of the Wiki

This is now our second tango with WikiMedia - now hosted on Amazon Web Services. The older Home Page can be found in this page's history.

New benefits

  • What You See Is What You Get editor is finally live! No more need to use those godawful "<br>" tags for linebreaks anymore. I do think this is a very decent editor, myself. You can of course always use "Edit Source" in order to use the old system for more fine-tuning, if you so choose. Still remember to add signatures in Talk pages, though now you have a button for that.
  • Slightly more consistent skin usage. If you aren't already, I recommend using "Dark Vector" for optimal viewing. If you want more skins, say so and I will import them.
  • The AWS server is now under our full control. It's not very powerful, but it IS mostly idle, and nothing stops us from running side-projects. If you ask nicely you can have SSH credentials and some explanations.
  • Upgrading to latest wiki version and loading various plugins and themes should be super easy, barely an inconvenience. Ask if you want any plugins and I'll get 'em.
  • Vectron is pleased. At least, that seems probable!
  • Space piracy protection - the basic AWS Frigate* service comes with ground batteries and a 30-missile launcher array, as well as just-in-time patrol services. Starlane defense is provided by EC2 Fleet**, of course. If you want to upgrade to the Advanced package for star system monitoring and Space Denial Area, that will cost extra but let me know.

* Service may be made-up

** Service is not imaginary but may not actually include what I say it does.

Additional work done

  • Site certificate has been changed. You might get a "not secure" message on your browser still, which is a bitch to get rid of, but you shouldn't get more security warnings. Please alert if that does happen.
  • A thumbnail on the browser tab - favicon has been established. Using the same galaxy picture; if you want a different one, say so.
  • Verified that debug messages from the php aren't exposed. We can re-enable them if we need to.

Work still to do

This was a bit of a rush job, but I will start improving on things quickly now, probably.

  • Thumbnails for .tif files - haven't checked if this works or not. Still not sure why you're even using that format.
  • Uploading arbitrary file types - haven't checked this either.
  • Need to explore template usage. In theory a page can be set to use a template. If that doesn't work for you, manually copy from the Template:Civilization page.
  • Sound off if you want anything on the side bar that isn't there yet.
